After series of calls from readers in the international community to know the exact state of affairs as regards the recent developments in University of Nigeria, I have decided to respond thus.
Firstly, will like to thank all the readers of this blog for insisting they wont believe any reports they get about UNN if its not uploaded here. Your support has been the fulcrum pivoting us. Thank you.
While we at gossip Lions we try to bring first hand reports of what is happening all around the world, we chose not to rush into hasty reportage. We consider it sine-qua-non to be circumspect about the happenings in our world before hitting the media, having in mind the integrity our organization is known for. This is an imperative prophylactic against verbal diarrhea we seek to cure the media of.
Yes, the school authority introduced an impromptu mid-semester break. Yes our very own dear colleague lost her life and we sadly mourn and with heavy eyes and tears flowing out of our eyes like rivers into seas. We cant help but pray God grants her soul eternal rest.
She (Sylvia) was a very vibrant 300 level student of Veterinary Medicine and the callousness of the bad state of roads in Nigeria stole her away from us. What a loss!
However, the media has taken the turn of events lately to spread lots of funny information, polluting the minds of those who care to listen (or read).
Some even said 21 people died. Gossip Lions will never be a party to such mediocre journalism. We back our reports with facts.
This is our university. This is Nigeria's premier university and any report that goes out of here must be devoid of unnecessary character defaming sentiments.
I am using this tone because of the silly stuff I have read lately about our dear University. Some group of brooding journalists who are themselves students here, took advantage of the situation on ground to post very silly comments knowing that times like this traffic into any websites that talks about the school will be high. How can a fellow student snap pictures of ugly sites in the university and post to the whole world in the name of journalism. He even said something about "the ruins of a fallen civilization". That's not just unfair, I call it " buying a lie from the white market"
Let me explain. The white man has made us believe the silly media cliché which says " bad news is good news" This makes us give negative reports on what is happening in Africa while they in turn, turn our heads with good reports about their region.
There is not as much terrorism and crime in Africa as there is in America. Do you know how many people are killed in the streets Mexico on a daily basis? Find out. We don't get to hear these things here. Just recently, I travelled to a certain Southern African country, and visited one university purported to be the 8th best in Africa and behold, the infrastructure they have there cant compete with anything we have in our great university, UNN. The structures we have in the faculty of Social sciences alone is enough to cover the whole university I visited. It is a federal university but their citizens pay about #165,000 as hostel fees. Let us learn to cherish our own. Things might not be at its best state(in our perspective though), but there are prospects which gives a mature mind the true feeling that we are making real progress. Of course we are not Harvard ,but trust me students here will prove their worth anywhere in the world. The training is superb and the infrastructure will definitely improve.
Yes we suffer from epileptic power supply and water insufficiency. But a critical study of the whole thing will make it obvious that these are just some of the struggles of the average Nigerian child. A real Nigerian problem when looked at from a wider perspective. It is the unfortunate legacy bequeathed to us by failed governments. Lets not be myopic my brothers! What we suffer in our university is not peculiar to us. It is everywhere within the scope of the Nigerian educational setting.
But while there are some things to complain about, let us learn to channel our grievances to the necessary domain and also appreciate the beautiful things we enjoy. yes we have stuff to be proud of.
Our university has the biggest Physical science faculty building in Africa. The biggest library in Africa with ultramodern facilities. I am a medical student and our teaching hospital is a world renowned Centre for Cardiothoracic surgery. Our Centre for biotechnology studies and research in Nsukka campus is highly ranked by UNESCO. We have the biggest Social science faculty in Africa in terms of infrastructure. This is just to mention a few. Oh did I forget to mention that the award wining and fastest rising news, inspiration and entertainment blog in Africa(gossiplions.blogspot.com) was founded in our university? "Abi you never hear say we win Nigeria blogger Award last week?"
Maybe the only thing we need now is stable power supply, water, and a few roads to be constructed at the Enugu Campus!!! Yes, these might be the basic things we really need. You want to argue that?
We have a vibrant student life. Ever heard of our famous Mar Lima spot in Nsukka campus and Ibiam hostel in Enugu campus? Lol...That's where we roll. I mean, that's where we waste our pocket money when "Conji" holds us so strong. Don't mind me, that's how we roll!!! Lol.
Our student leaders are, down to earth frugal and very humble. We see our SUG president everyday on campus, we shake his hands, we hug him, we love him. And before anyone starts saying things about our new Mauwa bus stop, mind you, it has given the whole place a face lift. Lots of renovation works going on. Thanks to student unionism. in my opinion, it cannot get any better. geo Angel says.
This is not to say we should not write stuff , air our views or speak our minds out. But lets appreciate the good things around us and stop making the "west" think Africa is truly black. "If you polish back shoe wella sef, the thing go shine wella.
At the end of he day, na God win "
