Babcock slashes heart surgeries to $15,000

Inside
Rofessor of Medicine and Chief Executive Officer, Tristate Cardiovascular Institute, USA, Kamar Adeleke, has described heart related cases as the number one killer disease in the country.  He said many people in the country live on borrowed time, obviously ignorant of their ailing heart conditions.
Prof Adeleke disclosed this at the unveiling of Tristate Heart and  Vascular Centre at the Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State last week. He said the centre, equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment, would compare with international standard and seek preventive measures to heart diseases ravaging Nigerians.
To raise hope for those suffering from the disease, Adeleke said the cost of the surgery at Babcock has been subsidised to $15,000 unlike the $75,000 to $150,000 cost obtainable in specialist hospitals in western countries.
A whooping sum of N2billion has already been invested in the centre located at the Babcock University Teaching Hospital, which would attract arrays of Nigerian medical professionals in Diaspora. Also, cutting-edge medical technology would be used for the open heart surgeries, which presently has a carrying capacity of three patients per day. With many patients already queuing for the procedure, the centre would soon expand to six operating rooms to allow surgeries for 18 patients per day, using hi-tech medical equipment.
Prof Adeleke, who is also a senior fellow at the American Society of Cardiologists, said several children afflicted with the disease were at grave risk because of late intervention. “Our goal is not to treat heart disease but to prevent it”, he added.
Other specialist doctors on the team at the Babcock University Teaching Hospital include: Dr. Edward Anderson, Dr. Michael Sanusi and Dr. Mudashiru Lawal
During the first open heart surgery in the university, there were 15 critical care personnel in the operating theatre that provided specific required services. They included perfussionists, cardiac operations nurses, internists and anesthesiologists.  Over 40 successful surgeries had been handled within a short period of time.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof Kayode Makinde, said the university has entered another threshold in health service delivery with the inauguration of the highly reputed Tristate Heart and Vascular Centre, the first in Africa.  He said the university would soon become a healing valley and set benchmark in medical education in Africa.
“Our service philosophy ensures compliance with international standards in terms of quality, effectiveness, and efficiency. The centre provides services that surpass the available cardio vascular services in the sub -Saharan Africa. The preventive cardiology team helps to support the centre’s goal of placing greater emphasis on prevention by organizing various outreach programmes and conducting regular health checkups,” he said.
Makinde said the open heart surgeries in the university would reduce capital flight from the country by obviating billions of Naira funnelled abroad by Nigerians seeking medical help. According to him, the university strives to set a benchmark in medical education and other specialty areas in the country and become the pride of African continent.
Makinde said the university had earlier commenced negotiations with lots of Nigerian medical professionals in Diaspora, promising that it would reverse brain drain to brain gain.
Some of the institute’s areas of specialization include cardiac surgery, heart catheterization, cardiac testing, paediatric cardiac care, critical care: comprising a critical care unit and the critical care team.
The Director, Marketing & Communication, Joshua Suleiman, said the new medical breakthrough at the Tristate Heart and Vascular Centre of the university would continue until all patients afflicted with heart related ailments receive effective medical cure.
While celebrating the feat, Prof Iheanyichukwu Okoro, a surgeon and senior Vice President of the university, described it as a milestone. Also, Mr. Olukunle Iyanda, Vice president, Development and Strategy of the university said the medical feat couldn’t have happened at a better time than this.

How the new Ooni emerged

Ooni
From Clement Adeyi, Osogbo
Ile-Ife, the acclaimed cradle of the Yoruba race, erupted in jubilation yesterday when the Osun State Government announced the appointment of Prince Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi as the new Ooni, the town’s revered monarch.
The formal announcement was made in the early hours through a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Moshood Olalekan Adeoti.
In the three-paragraph statement, the government said: “The governor of the State of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola, has approved the appointment of a new Ooni of Ife. He is Prince Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi of the Giesi Ruling House of Ile Ife, State of Osun.
“This choice follows the completion of the due process by the kingmakers and the communication of their decision to the government,” the statement added.
One of the kingmakers and secretary to Ife Traditional Council, Chief Adetoye Olatunde Odewole, told Daily Sun at the Ile-Odua Palace in Ife yesterday that Prince Adeyeye Ogunwusi who contested alongside 36 other contestants from the Giesi Ruling House was unanimously voted winner by the 14 kingmakers and his name was submitted to the governor at the weekend for official announcement.
He further disclosed that the selection followed due process, adding that it was the turn of the Giesi Ruling House to produce the new Ooni.
Asked whether it was only the kingmakers’ decision that brought Oba Ogunwusi on board as the new Ooni, Chief Odewole said the Ifa Oracle was also consulted and gave the nod for the choice.
While also reacting to Prince Ogunwusi’s appointment, his father, Pa Ogunwusi enthused: “To God be the glory. God has sent him on a message. He will give him the grace to do the job well. The Glory of God has been upon him right from childhood with the hope that his fame will be heard about in the whole world and that has happened today and he is going to be a blessing to Ife people.”
In a related development, a prominent leader from the Giesi Ruling House and former Special Adviser to Governor Rauf Aregbesola on Youth and Special Needs, Mr Biyi Odunlade, said that Prince Ogunwusi’s emergence as the new Ooni was not by chance but by merit and popular vote by the kingmakers and the divine approval of the Ifa Oracle.
He assured that based on his amiable character, integrity, humility and passion for the culture, tradition and development of Ife, his emergence would bring more peace, progress and unity to not only Ife people but also the entire Yoruba race.
When Daily Sun visited the ancient town yesterday, there was heavy security presence, as heavily armed military men were on patrol, while armed policemen and officers of the Security and Civil Defence Corps were within the gate and premises of the palace.
Also, some kingmakers, palace chiefs and traditional rulers were in high spirits at the Emese courts of the palace.
There was palpable peace in the town, with everybody going about their normal businesses.
The members of the family of the Giesi Ruling House also trooped to the streets in jubilation over the appointment of their son, flaunting a big poster bearing the picture of Prince Ogunwusi.
The jubilation continued until they emptied into the house of Pa Ogunwusi, the father of the new monarch for celebration.
Since the death of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade at a London hospital on July 28, there had been tension and controversy in the race for a successor, a development which divided the four ruling houses, following the kingmakers’ endorsement of the Giesi Rulig House based on the 1980 Ife Chieftaincy Declaration.
In the circumstance, the Lafogido Ruling House went to court to challenge the decision.
But the Osun State High Court presided over by the Chief Judge, Justice Oyebola Adepele Ojo, on Friday, dismissed the suit challenging the competence of the chieftaincy declaration.
The appointment of Ogunwusi has since put paid to the whole controversy.

Nullification of Wike's election by Rivers tribunal is embarassing- Mimiko

Image result for mimiko
The Ondo state governor, Olusegun Mimiko has described as embarrassing, the Saturday October 24th judgement of the Rivers state election tribunal which nullified the election of Nyesom Wike as governor of the state. Mimiko gave his reaction to the judgement while speaking with journalist in Akure, the Ondo state capital yesterday October 26th.

"Our mindset is that tribunal judgment can go either way, but the Rivers own is particularly embarrassing. We all know the circumstances surrounding the Rivers State tribunal. You recall that for unjustifiable cause, that tribunal was not allowed to sit in Port Harcourt, it was taken to Abuja.
Somewhere along the line, the chairman of the Tribunal got changed.

Now, we challenge the jurisdiction of the Tribunal and it has gotten to the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court will give judgment in the next few days. The Abuja Tribunal continues to sit. On Thursday, nine written addresses were adopted.

The adoption of the written addresses were done on 1pm on Thursday. In the course of that trial, the litigants – both plaintiffs and defendants – called more than 100 witnesses, documents that were presented as exhibits were more than 1,000.

We are talking of more than 100 witnesses and 1,000 documents were admitted, we are talking of nine written addresses. None of the addresses were less than 40 pages. The adoption was on Thursday, around 1pm and Friday around 2pm, barely under 24 hours, notice had been issued that judgment was ready, that judgment was given on Saturday.

This sequence and turn of event assault the sensibilities of lawyers that really believe in justice.”he said

ON UNN RESUMPTION AND SCHOOL FEES SCHEDULE FOR 2015/2016 ACADEMIC SESSION...

Image result for unn
Many of you have waited for this post. You’ve browsed, called and did everything to get this information. It’s finally here and you’d do well to read through it very carefully.
Activities surrounding the forthcoming academic session in UNN have been very unique in their unpredictability. A lot of directives and counter directives from the school authorities. A lot of newly admitted students and hopefuls have made a couple of mistakes and even lost some money as a result of this. The issues started with the redesign of the school’s website and restructuring of the registration portal which many stakeholders complained bitterly about saying the timing was wrong. This was shortly followed by a directive by the newly instituted Buhari-led administration that every Federal Government Ministry, Department or Agency should start using the Treasury Single Account (TSA) for all government revenues, incomes and other receipts in order to promote transparency and facilitate compliance with sections 80 and 162 of the 1999 constitution. This, as we all saw, affected the already planned payment procedures and disrupted the school’s original schedules. Dates were shifted and shifted again to accommodate and cushion the effects.
Then the time for WAUGA Games came and UNN happens to be the host for 2015. The games started on Thursday, 15th October, 2015 and is expected to end on the 25th of October. Partly because of this, everything about supplementary list, payment of acceptance fee and other such activities were piped down though they are still being worked on.
Some of these have been the issues since the primary admission list was released. But maybe I should also remind you that the major issues are not peculiar to UNN. UNIZIK, for example, has had to amend her Academic Calendar for the 2015/2016 session – now with new resumption dates for both old and new students. The same is very likely to be the case in UNN. 29th of October has been widely circulated as the UNN resumption date for 2015/2016 academic session and many are planning towards traveling to UNN or UNEC on that date. Yes, planning is good but you are advised not to do anything by way of traveling until the school makes an official statement on resumption/calendar for the session. So just stick around this website to get updates about any new developments as they come up.
Let me also remind you that one or two faculties in University of Nigeria run calendars that are slightly different from others. Such faculties are Law and Veterinary Medicine (and I think Pharmacy also). Don’t get confused if you hear that they are starting soon or that they have started or writing exams while others are not.
You are, therefore, advised to keep getting your documents for clearance ready and handy while you wait till all these issues with payment in Federal Government agencies are resolved. If you need to look again at the list of documents required for clearance of newly admitted students, click this link =>>Documents Required for Clearance of Newly Admitted Students (fully listed and explained). Keep planning and budgeting. That’s the much you can do now and remember not to go around asking when this or that will happen. If you understand all that has been going on, you’d know it’s a wrong question to ask.
Ok. I just said keep planning and budgeting and many who’d want to do so don’t even have the slightest idea of what the school fees schedule would be like. Some of them have commented several questions on this website about the UNN consolidated school fees for the 2015/2016 academic session. Sadly, that information has not been released by the school. But you can find below, the consolidated school fees schedule for the last session. Only the First year fees are given because students of other years already know what they paid. You can take your time to view them below.
1. PHYSICAL SCIENCES, First year = N58,950
2. SOCIAL SCIENCES, First year = N57,950
3. ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES, First year = N60,450
4. AGRICULTURE, First year= N57,950
5. EDUCATION, First year= N57,950
6. ARTS, First year= N58,950
7. BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES, First year= N58,950
8. VETERINARY MEDICINE, First year= N64,450
9.MEDICAL SCIENCES, First year= N64,450
10. DENTISTRY, First year= N64,450
11. HEALTH SCIENCES AND TECH, First year= N64,450
12. BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, First year= N60,450
13. ENGINEERING, First year= N61,450
14. LAW, First year= N63,450
15. PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCES, First year= N64,450
For those interested in getting the school-provided hostel accommodation, note that female hostels went for N11,500 while males got theirs at N9,000. You can plan and budget with the figures above bearing in mind that there would likely be some adjustments in the new session. Finally, as you plan, remember to factor in the money for the acquisition of your laptop. You can click the link =>>THE EM-POWER SCHEME (COMPULSORY LAPTOP ACQUISITION) FOR UNN ‘NEW’ STUDENTS to read about it. Direct Entry (D.E) candidates should note that there is very likely not to be any oral interviews for them this year. If you did very well in the CBT screening examination, expect your name in the forthcoming first supplementary list.

Petrol price to come down - VP Osinbajo

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo says that the government is working to reduce the price of petroleum products by encouraging and working with private refineries and reducing importation. Osinbajo, who is in the UK to sign the Nigeria-UK solar energy agreement, told Bloomberg in an interview...

"We are going to be unbundling the NNPC so that its various components are effective core centres and are able to do their business well. We are going to have private refineries at the site of the old refineries, so they can benefit from the available infrastructure. So, we think that in the medium term, we would be able to get cheaper pump price, pump price of oil would be cheaper because we would be importing far less refined petroleum. A lot of that will be produced locally.
“Now, we have well over 30 modular refineries licences, so we think a lot of modular refineries would come. Many of them, their major concern is feed stock, are we going to be guaranteed feed stock? We are working on that. Once we are able to deal with that, we feel we would substantially be able to reduce pump price and get the whole business of importation of refined petroleum and the NNPC just getting directly involved in business; we are going to reduce that. The objective is to make the NNPC play more regulatory function.
“They are options that are always there. But we think that there are ways we can raise our own potion of contribution to the Joint Ventures. It will only be a last resort and we have not come anywhere near that.” Osinbajo said

Preparing your body for pregnancy after 30

Found this interesting article on SandraRose. Read below if it concerns you...:-)

Women were not designed to get pregnant or give birth after age 30. That’s why there are more risks involved with childbirth after age 30. The reason women in their 40s have fertility issues is because the human body is not prepared for natural birth at that age.
But according to authors Christa Orecchio and Willow Buckley, women over 30 can give birth naturally by preparing their bodies before conception.

In their new book “How To Conceive Naturally: And Have a Healthy Pregnancy After 30,” Orecchio and Buckley say women over 30 can prepare their bodies for late age childbirth by eating right.

1. Preparing your body. Prepare your body for childbirth by practicing proper nutrition such as eliminating artificial and processed food. “Proper nutrition forms the core of this foundation and dramatically affects preconception health,” Orecchio and Buckley write. “Prenatal nutrition also determines the quality of the baby’s major organs and even her predisposition to certain diseases.”

2. Eliminate stress. If your life is stressful, your fetus will feel stressed out. “A good mindset is key,” says Orecchio. “You create your own culture, so communicate with your baby before and during pregnancy. Create enough time for yourself; have a morning or night routine that’s sacred to you.”

3. Add placenta to your diet. Orecchio, a certified nutritionist, suggests eating encapsulated placenta 3 months prior to conception to balance your postpartum hormones. “The Kardashians are doing it!” said Orecchio.

4. Be good to your gut. Orecchio recommends taking a multi-strain probiotic for 90 days before you conceive to prepare your gut to cultivate digestive enzymes and to help with digestion in your stomach and intestines. “Whatever imbalances you have, youth can overcome that. But not as you age. Then you have to do the work,” says Orecchio.

Econet chairman Strive Masiyiwa testifies against Ibori in UK court

Few days after making startling revelations about former Delta state governor, James Ibori and how he demanded $4.5 million bribe from him to successfully run Econet in Nigeria (read here), Strive Masiyiwa, the chairman of the telecommunication company, shared another part of his bitter encounter with Ibori. According to a new post on his Facebook wall, Masiyiwa said he was called upon by UK courts to testify against Ibori in London which he said he did without hesitation.

Corruption often involves very sophisticated bankers and lawyers in Western financial centers. When corruption happens in Nigeria, or any other African country, it usually also happens at the same time with at least one accomplice on the other side of the world, whether in London, Geneva, or the like.
The London lawyer Bhadresh Gohil, who I wrote about in my last post, is just one of scores of international advisors who handle the sophisticated movement of money in the world, in this case the money stolen from the Nigerian people and hidden in overseas bank accounts.
___When you choose financial or legal advisors, choose very wisely. Your very life could depend on it.
When Mr Gohil and other family and associates of Delta State governor James Ibori were arrested in London, I was asked by the British government to be a state witness in their trial. I agreed without hesitation.
Being a witness in such a case is not easy. It meant that I had to stop working for several weeks and just focus on preparation to give evidence. I knew I would be grilled in an open court by expensive defense lawyers who would try to challenge my integrity.
I was told that many potential witnesses had declined to give evidence in open court out of fear.
Not me!
I headed to England as a "Witness to Her Majesty's Government." For me personally, I went as a "witness on behalf of the people of Nigeria and Africa." It was my duty.
A witness can help ensure justice is done. Solid evidence is crucial in ensuring the truth is heard and that the rule of law is upheld. Without witness testimony, criminals can operate with impunity, one of the greatest threats to Africa’s future.
What is impunity? It basically means evil actions have no legal consequences. As a result, criminals are allowed to stay busy committing their crimes, knowing they can get away with it without punishment.
___A culture of impunity endangers the prospects for prosperity and security in Africa in every imaginable way.
Mr Ibori's wife, his sister, and his mistress, who each had each received money from the sale of the shares in V-Mobile (which were assets of the people of Nigeria), were also arrested in London and were sentenced to five years in prison.
My written witness statements were submitted and I prepared to appear in court to be cross-examined.
The night before I was due to take the stand in an open London court as witness for the state, I was told Mr Gohil and his associates had suddenly pleaded guilty. My lawyers told me that my witness statement was too strong and Mr Gohil and his team were afraid they would get even stiffer sentences!
In late 2010, Mr Gohil was sentenced to a total of 10 years in prison for crimes including conspiracy to defraud, conspiracy to make false instruments, money laundering and proceeds of crime. The sentencing judge said to him, "You were a solicitor of the Supreme Court and holding out as a man of integrity... You have brought shame on your family, your profession and your country.”
When corrupt people like this get into trouble, they often pay some of the best lawyers in the world to help them get out of it. Taking them on successfully requires authorities equally determined and sophisticated in their approach. These authorities in turn need the cooperation of witnesses prepared to stand in court and help with the prosecution.

Is Ebola coming back? British nurse who contracted Ebola is back in isolation.

A British nurse who contracted Ebola in Sierre Leone is back in hospital today after falling ill with the deadly virus for a second time. Pauline Cafferkey, 39, was flown from Glasgow back to the Royal Free Hospital in north London by the RAF this morning, ten months after she first recovered from the illness.

The NHS nurse was wheeled from a jet at RAF Northolt by medics in hazard suits on a bed surrounded by a protective bubble before police closed roads so her ambulance could rush her to the nearby hospital.
She is said to have developed an 'unusual late complication' as a result of the original Ebola infection and tests have revealed that the virus is still lingering in her body.
Miss Cafferkey is now back in the isolation unit where she spent a month and became critically ill after being diagnosed with Ebola last December.
Confirming the relapse - and the seriousness of her condition - Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt tweeted: 'Thoughts with Pauline Cafferkey today as she battles Ebola for the second time'

I can be successfully impeached if I interfere - Pres. Buhari speaks on Saraki's Trial

President Buhari says he will not be interfering in the trial of the senate president Bukola Saraki at the Code of Conduct Tribunal as he could be successfully impeached if he does so. According to him, the Nigerian constitution does not permit interference between the three arms of government, that is the Legislature, Judiciary and the Executive.

Buhari said this in an interview with Sahara TV.

"What has the president got to do with another person. The case is in court. Do Nigerians expect me to tell the chief justice to tell which ever court that they shouldn't try the senate president? Do Nigerians know about the constitution of their own country? The judiciary, the legislator and the executives have got their own roles within the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria? Then how do they expect me to interfere? I can be successfully impeached if I do it?" he said
Asked how confident he is on the senate president just as 84 senators did two days, Buhari said
"That will depend on the outcome of the court. decision".
Asked if himself and Saraki are on talking terms, he said
"Rightly. You know there are some appointments which the senate has to approve and I can't remember how many letters I personally wrote to him because it is constitutional. There are people I want to work with but I cannot work with them unless the national assembly approves. So I have been writing to the senate president and to the leader of the house. This is constitutional."he said
