Obasanjo is a liar and an economic illiterate – Soyinka

Prof. Wole Soyinka, has stated that he has no respect for former President Obasanjo, who he describeds as an indescribable liar. Soyinka talked about the former president on Friday night when he responded to questions during a programme tagged: ‘An evening with Wole Soyinka’, organised by Globacom.

Asked to respond to Obasanjo’s assessment of him in the former president’s book titled ‘My Watch’, where he notes that Soyinka is good at hunting and wines but a political illiterate, Soyinka said that he was hardly bothered because he believed that Obasanjo was a liar.

Soyinka said, “Obasanjo is entitled to his opinion. But the question is: ‘Who respects the opinion of a liar?’

I can spend the whole night proving that he is a liar. Obasanjo was once described by an economist, the late Prof Ojetunji Aboyade, as an economic illiterate. They nearly went into blows that night. It was Prof. Mabogunje who separated them.

“So, if an economic illiterate calls somebody a political illiterate, no problem at all.

“In ‘ My Watch’, Obasanjo told the first lie when he said he deplored lies. Anybody who said he never plotted to have an unconstitutional third term in office, even as a writer, I need a word to describe him.”

The former President and the Nobel laureate have been in a running battle taking swipes at each other over a lingering issue between them. Obasanjo had once stated that Soyinka once vowed that the differences between the two of them would not be resolved on earth.

Obasanjo had also in his book, My Watch, and at public events described Soyinka as an expert in wine matters than in political analysis.

He had said:

“For Wole, no one can be good, nor can anything be spot-on politically except that which emanates from him or is ordained by him. His friends and loved ones will always be right and correct, no matter what they do or fail to do. He is surely a better wine connoisseur and a more successful aparo (guinea fowl) hunter than a political critic.

“Wole Soyinka is a gifted man. I have always acknowledged that but he is a bad politician and I have also always said that. That is my own point of view. He may agree with it, he may not agree with it. For instance, I know that if I want somebody to give me the best wine, one of the people I will go to is Wole Soyinka and I know he has a taste for good wine and I said that in the book.”

Police enjoins doctors to treat accident victims and persons with gunshot wounds without police report

The Inspector-General of Police, Solomon E. Arase,  has called on members of the public including medical personnel to attend to accident victims and persons with gunshot wounds without any police report when the need arises. In a statement released today August 21st, Arase said the police can be informed afterwards for necessary action after the injured have been given proper attention. The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Solomon E. Arase, NPM fdc has enjoined members of the public including medical personnel to attend to accident victims and persons with gunshot injuries and thereafter, inform the Police for necessary action.

This became imperative, following neglects and consequent untimely death of victims in this regard out of fear of being implicated without Police involvement.

The Police High Command also directed its Officers and men not to harass good Samaritans/Nigerians in this regard, but endeavour to elicit correct facts in relation to incident from them.

Doctors on duty are equally duty bound to treat victims of gunshot wounds and further inform Police of relevant facts. The safety of Nigerians is a collaborative effort of all and sundry. Police therefore, enjoin citizens not to relent in their cooperative attitude in ensuring safety of all. While they are also to report any suspicious person or persons to the nearest Police Station.

Buhari, ready to fight to finish insurgency

President Muhammadu Buhari has re-affirmed his administration’s determination to end the activities of Boko Haram insurgents soon.
He expressed the conviction that the end of the insurgency was in sight, given the added vigour with which the war against the sect was being prosecuted by Nigeria and her allies.
The president gave the assurance, when he had audience with the Chadian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Special Envoy of President Idris Deby, Mr. Mousa Faki Mahamat, in his office.
He assured that with the higher morale among troops in the frontline against Boko Haram insurgents and their improved logistics, equipment and training, a rapid end to the insurgency should be expected.
The president said, however, that Nigeria and Chad must be prepared to make more sacrifices to end the scourge of Boko Haram because the two countries were at the, “very heart” of the insurgency.
“We will sustain our effort, and the insurgents will be defeated soon,” he vowed. The special envoy of the Chadian president said President Deby appreciated the leadership being shown by President Buhari in the war against terrorism.
“We also appreciate the diligence shown in appointing a commander for the Multinational Joint Task Force, and President Deby believes that the fight will end in a few months.
“Our people rely on us to end the insurgency because economic development is being hampered. This fight has to come to an end. My coming here is to re-affirm our full commitment. Beyond the number of troops earlier announced, Chad is still ready to commit more soldiers. The enemy is weakened already. Let’s stand firm, and neutralize them,” he said.

So this morning, Gossip lions received a mail and a text message that Five Star Music artist Skiibii collapsed in his sitting room and died. And they sent me the photo above. The source said he'd dressed up and was going for his media rounds today when he suddenly fell and was unable to be revived. Because I know the guys at Five Star Music, I contacted them for confirmation. I actually called the music label's artist manager, Soso Soberekon, to confirm the news. Soso, who had already posted a candlelight image on his instagram page said he would call me back with confirmation, that they were just hearing about the incident, that he and Kcee were in Europe. He called me back at exactly 10.02am to confirm that Skiibii had passed on. So I carried the news.

 
But a few minutes ago (hours after I carried the news), Kcee called me to say Skiibii hadn't died. He said he received the news of his collapse this morning but said he wasn't sure what was going on because he was not in Nigeria. He said his brother told him Skiibii had been found with no pulse and wasn't breathing. They rushed him to the hospital and after hours there, he has been revived. Kcee told me he wanted me to be the first to announce he's back to life because I broke the news of his alleged death.

To be honest, I find this all very strange. Skiibii just released music and has been on the road for a week now promoting it. Someone said to me that all this could be a stunt...for him to trend (which he is - he's the number trending topic in Nigeria) and all media houses in Nigeria have carried his supposed demise.

If this is a stunt (Skiibii dropped a video just yesterday), then it's quite sad that they would go to this extent to make him known to Nigerians. I know a lot of Nigerian artists put up stunts, but to play with your life is sick! Extremely sick to fake your own death for fame and attention! But if it's not a stunt and he indeed woke from the dead, then I'm very happy for him.

Barcelona have announced that Andres Iniesta will succeed Xavi as club captain.
Lionel Messi will be second captain for the 2015-16 season after hitting 56 goals in 56 games last season.

Buhari calls for inclusion of Islamic books in federal schools’ Curriculum

President Buhari has called on the Federal Ministry of Education to include two Islamic Studies books written by the late Justice Muhammad Bashir Sambo in the secondary school curriculum for all Federal Government Colleges.

According to The News Agency of Nigeria, President Buhari gave the directive at the weekend in Kaduna while launching the reviewed editions of the books which were first published in 1974.

Represented by Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State, the president, according to NAN noted that such books had become essential in the face of declining moral and religious values in the country.
