Okeke female hostel at UNN razed by fire

The Okeke female hostel at University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, was gutted by fire last night. The fire started as a result of a spark from the wire when the school generator supplied power to the hostel. This is the worst fire incident in the university as neither the Dean of student affairs, the director of works department nor the Chairman of Servicom who came around was able to save the situation.
Most painful is that men of the fire service who came around were incapacitated as they had no water. Even the director of works could not do anything. Lack of water in both the hostel and the neighbouring outing ones made even students who came to rescue the situation handicapped. Finally, men of the fire service returned after the whole of 300 series which is a total of 34 rooms had perished, thereby rendering 136 or more students homeless and useless as all their documents, property, and even possibly, compulsory laptops for which some are yet to pay up, have all gone up in ashes. A student who is an honourable member of the House of Representatives said she has written so many times about the connections to the appropriate quarters without any response. There is no functional fire service in the whole University town of Nsukka. The wild fire which is akin to what I watch in American horror movies could have been controlled if the works department of the school is well equipped. I would want to believe that the university administration will adequately compensate the victims; some of who are already enjoying their xmas holiday. In just a year, 3 female hostels in UNN had had fire accident. First it was Okpara hostel, then Aja-Nwachukwu and now Okeke.

Technically we have won the war against Boko Haram - Pres. Buhari

President Buhari says that his government has technically won the war against Boko Haram. He said this in an interview with BBC
"I assure you we haven't failed. Adamawa state, Yobe state are free from Boko Haram. Borno state which is there base, I think they have two to three local government. Boko Haram has reverted to using IEDs Improvised Explosive Device, indoctrinating young girls from 15 years and below to go and explode it in churches, mosques, market places, motorparks.
They have now been reduced to that but articulated conventional attacks on centers of communication and population in towns and so on, they are no longer capable of doing that effectively. So I think technically we have won the war because people are going back to their neighborhoods. We have our committees on the ground liaising with Local governments. People are going back. Our major problem now is rehabilitation because over 1.5 million Internally Displaced Persons, repairing the infrastructures, schools, health centers...the number of bridges blown..that is what we are facing now. But Boko Haram as an organized fighting force, I assure you that we have dealt with them"he said
When asked what his opinion is about  Nigerians criticizing him for always blaming the last government instaed of focusing on how to make the country better, he said
"I think they are being unfair. Boko haram was effective on 16 local government areas before in the three states. Borno Yobe and Adamawa. Yobe and Adamawa are absolutely free and there are about three local governments were Boko Harams are there and I have told you they cannot marshal forces and attack towns or military installation as they did in Maiduguri before. I don't think this is mere talking. We have moved Service Chiefs, we re-organized the military.  We have got some hardware for them and we have gotten retraining from the British, Americans and with the French. A lot of is being done"he said

Princess Diana's edible wedding cake set to sell for $4k after 34 years

A note accompanying the presentation box reads: “With best wishes from Their Royal Highnesses, The Prince & Princess of Wales”.
Incredibly, it is now set to sell at Nate D. Sanders auctioneers.

Sam Heller, from the auction house, said:
A 34-year-old slice of fruit cake is set to sell for a staggering $4000- because it is from the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana.
Despite being made 34 years ago, the cake has been perfectly preserved thanks to the high level of alcohol in it and is still edible - but its value comes from the fact that it is still intact.

“The wedding of Lady Diana and Prince Charles captured the attention of the world on television and through many newspapers and magazines.
“And even today, people just can not get enough of the late Princess. “Alcohol has preserved the cake making it still edible, although collectors would rather it remain intact.
“Collectors are willing to pay a premium to own a piece of history from the most famous wedding of the 20th century.”
The auction will be held in Los Angeles today Thursday, Dec 17th.

ZARIA VIOLENCE...British High Commissioner, Paul Arkwright releases statement

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Paul Arkwright has released a statement on the violent clash between Nigerian Army and the Islamic Movement of Nigeria. He called on the Nigerian military to conduct their operations within the rule of law. The statement below:

"Like many across Nigeria, I am following with concern the reports of violence in Zaria over the weekend between the Nigerian security forces and the Islamic Movement of Nigeria. I am further concerned at reports that protests in Kaduna have turned violent.
Nigeria’s religious and ethnic diversity adds a great deal to this country’s rich culture. It is important, therefore, that Nigerians of all faiths are allowed to assemble and worship freely. In addition, I call on the security forces to conduct their operations within the rule of law, and for demonstrators to ensure any protests are peaceful and equally act within the law.

Obama appoints 34yr old Nigerian, Adewale Adeyemo as his new deputy adviser for International Economic affairs

United States President, Barack Obama has appointed a Nigerian national Adewale Adeyemo, to succeed Caroline Atkinson as his deputy national security adviser for international economic affair, The Wall Street Journal reports.
Adewale "Wally" Adeyemo,34, joined the White House's National Economic Council as deputy director this fall from the Treasury, where he served most recently as the deputy chief of staff to Secretary Jacob Lew.
Ms. Atkinson has served in her current post since June 2013, a position that includes coordinating U.S. participation in the annual summits of the Group of 20 and Group of Seven countries. Ms. Atkinson also played key roles in the recently concluded climate negotiations in Paris.

Mr. Adeyemo was the Treasury’s lead negotiator on the currency agreement that was part of the Pacific trade deal. He also worked on Treasury’s response to crises in Ukraine and Greece and in 2010 was one of the first officials charged with standing up the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
In a statement, Mr. Obama thanked Ms. Atkinson for her service and said he was grateful that Mr. Adeyemo would carry on her work. Mr. Adeyemo had been nominated by Mr. Obama to serve as assistant Treasury secretary for international markets and development, but a White House official said Mr. Adeyemo had asked the president to withdraw the nomination given his new role.
The statement from Obama reads:
"For the past four years, I have relied on Caroline Atkinson, most recently as my Deputy National Security Advisor for International Economics, as we’ve navigated pressing challenges to the global economy.
"As my representative at the G-7 and G-20, she played a key role in coordinating our response to international financial crises, worked with our allies to devise and implement targeted economic sanctions to advance our national security goals, played a vital role in our economic engagements with China, and helped to achieve breakthrough agreements on climate that will strengthen our economy and our security.
"I’ve relied on, and benefited from, Caroline’s knowledge and judgment and, as she concludes her tenure on my national security team, I am deeply appreciative of her service.
"I am grateful that Caroline’s work will be carried on by Adewale “Wally” Adeyemo, who has served in my administration since 2009. At the Treasury Department, he was part of the team that helped coordinate our response to the global recession, laying the foundation for renewed growth at home and abroad.
“He helped establish the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and he’s been our point person on a range of international economic issues, including negotiations on strong currency agreements around the Trans Pacific Partnership. I will be calling on Wally’s intellect, judgment and dedication as we sustain America’s global economic leadership, which reinforces our national security, and as we work with allies and partners around the world to create jobs and opportunity for all our people."
On his part, Mr. Lew said that Mr. Adeyemo had "developed a network of international relationships in economic offices around the world to promote U.S. interests effectively."
Former Treasury Secretary Tim Geihner said Mr. Adeyemo, who joined the administration in 2009, was a “natural diplomat with a great feel for policy."
The position has served as a springboard to even higher profile international finance posts.Mochael Froman, who is currently the U.S. trade representative, held the post under both Mr. Obama and President Bill Clinton. Federal Reserve governor Lael Brainard , who previously served as a senior Treasury official in the Obama administration, held the post in the Clinton administration.

Azealia Banks arrested after allegedly biting the breast of a female security guard

According to E! News rapper, Azealia Banks was arrested early Wednesday morning after allegedly assaulting a female security guard outside Meatpacking club Up&Down.
A witness at the venue said that the 24-year-old was not invited to the party but came with an invited guest.

When Azealia tried to go downstairs to the party, security turned her away and told her she had to get a stamp to enter. Azealia got upset about this, but ended up getting stamped and gained access into the private party.

Once inside, it appeared that she was offended that the security did not know who she was or recognize her as a celebrity. This resulted in an altercation, which another insider said involved her spitting in the owner's face, and it ultimately led to her being escorted out by the female security guard who became the victim of Banks' alleged assault.
The New York Police Department said that at 12:46 a.m., Banks was escorted out of the venue "when she became verbally abusive and began to push the victim and bit the victim on the breast, causing swelling and redness."

Authorities added that she "was arrested and charged with assault, disorderly conduct and harassment."

Banks was released Wednesday evening after seeing the judge.

In a party or public gathering, they will meet the MC to make an announcement of a particular car with registration number so so and so blocking them, while gun will be drawn out to the potential driver at the point of the car.
Do the following when your vehicle registration number is being called: (1) take ur time b/4 going out, (2) don't go out alone, at least in coy of two or more people, (3) don't go directly to where the car is parked, at least to confirm from a distance if you are blocking another car truly. Somebody who witnessed how one of such announcer was apprehended with a pistol in his pocket. Share this experience today and save a lot of people. You must be your brother's keeper".

Nigeria, Russia, China, others vote against UN resolution to protect human rights defenders

UN General Assembly on Wednesday, November 25, adopted a resolution which seeks to protect those who face risks and attacks for their work to defend and promote human rights.

The resolution includes a number of new, important and substantive provisions, including as to the vital role of advocacy and the work of human rights defenders in contributing to sustainable
development and the realisation of economic, social and cultural rights, and as to the responsibilities of business enterprises with respect to engaging, consulting and protecting defenders.
Russia, China, Nigeria, Kenya,Myanmar and South Africa were among countries that voted against the resolution. Nigeria said that they saw 'no need' for the resolution, effectively denying the importance of independent civil society and dissent to democracy and development. China explained that it had ‘no choice’ but to vote against it as 'certain western countries' use the protection of defenders as an excuse to 'interfere in the internal affairs of developing countries and disrupt their social stability'.

While congratulating the 144 countries that stood with human rights defenders, International Service for Human Rights, Programme Manager and Legal Counsel. Madeleine Sinclair said they are disappointed with the 14 countries that voted against the resolution and those who declined.
"We are extremely disappointed that 14 countries voted against the text and that a further 40 States took the cowardly position of abstaining. We agree with the Norwegian sponsors of the text who stated that both votes against the resolution and abstentions amount to a failure to recognise the important role of defenders and the need for their protection."

"It is particularly disappointing to see current and incoming members of the Human Rights Council either abstaining or voting no on the resolution. The votes of South Africa and Myanmar are a complete betrayal of the many brave human rights defenders who have played such a vital role in the transitions in those States" she added.

Return of 'Looted' Funds: Buhari is a liar, he should stay at home to govern - Fayose

Read the press statement below...
Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has carpeted President Muhammadu Buhari’s claim that many of those who looted the public treasuries in the government of former President Goodluck Jonathan had started returning the stolen funds to the government, saying the President should rather stay at home to govern the country instead of junketing around the globe and acting like a saint before the international community.
The governor challenged the President to tell Nigerians how much was returned and the looters who returned the stolen funds, adding that “Since the purported looted funds belong to the Federal Republic of Nigeria, it ought to have been paid into the Federation Account and shared by the Federal, State and Local Government.”

Special Assistant to the Governor on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, said in a statement issued in Ado-Ekiti on Thursday that Governor Fayose advised President Buhari to tackle the collapsed economy of the country headlong instead of going from one country to another, casting aspersion on Nigerians with his sing-song of fighting corruption.

He said the President’s attitude was yet to change from that of 1984 when he was military Head of State, adding that; “Buhari’s statement in Tehran, Iran that it was easier for him as a military Head of State in 1984 to arrest corrupt individuals and put them in protective custody was a pointer to the fact that he has not changed from the dictator that he was then.

“The truth is that Buhari did not fight corruption in 1984. Rather, he persecuted great Nigerians, especially the likes Chief Adekunle Ajasin, Chief Ambrose Ali, Chief Bisi Onabanjo, Alhaji Lateef Jakande and Chief Bola Ige, who served the people meritoriously. “Is Buhari justifying the imprisonment of Dr Alex Ekwueme, who was only the Vice President or All Progressives Congress (APC) leader like Chief Bisi Akande, who only served as a Deputy Governor?”

While urging the President to stop acting like the sole-administrator of Nigeria and the only honest man among Nigerians, Governor Fayose said “Nigerians are desirous of concrete developments, not rhetoric about fight against corruption that is only being used to persecute perceived political enemies of the President both in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and within the APC.

“As at today, Nigerians are faced with serious hardship occasioned by prolonged fuel scarcity that the Federal Government does not have any solution to. Multi-national companies are laying-off thousands of workers while contractors working for the Federal Government have left their sites.

Yet, what we get to hear from the President is noise in foreign lands about non-existing fight against corruption. “Honestly, this President should get to work and stop lying to Nigerians and the international community.”

Northern Lawmakers kicks against birth control, says it is anti-Islam and a direct attack on their religious beliefs

A member of the lower chamber of the National Assembly, Babatunde Gabriel Kolawole on Tuesday, November 24, moved for the motion titled "Need for the federal government to curb population explosion in Nigeria." Kolawole in his arguement urged the Federal Government to come up with a policy to check the alarming rate of population growth and to educate Nigerians on the importance of family planning through the National Orientation Agency (NOA).

The Lawmaker based his arguement on a recent report by a United States Population Reference Bureau which projected that Nigeria's population will increase to 433 million in 2050. However, the motion was strongly objected by some members of the House from the north who said it was a direct attack on Islam. In particular, Sani Abdul, from Bauchi State noted that the motion was unnecessary and a waste of time.

In his arguement, Abdul suggested that Nigeria's resource and landmass can carter for any population explosion. Zakare Mohammed in his contribution pointed out that though he was not against the motion, he advised that the country’s culture must be preserved. Adam Jagaba argues that the motion is within the ambit of the constitution and did not contravene any part of the House’s rule.

Speaker Yakubu Dogara intervened and advised members to be guided by national interest. "I don't think there is an attack on any religion," Dogara said. "The motion is looking at a policy on population in ensuring planning. It is calling for the development of a policy on population. So i don't see how it attacks any religion" he added.

The controversial motion was later referred to the House Committes on Justice, Population, Rules and Business for further legislative contribution.

Governors advise Pres Buhari to diversify in order to boost internally generated revenue

The Nigeria Governors Forum, NGF, said that diversification would help boost the Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, base of the country.
Speaking in Abuja at the beginning of a two-day Internally Generated Revenue workshop organised by the NGF, Chairman of the forum and governor of Zamfara State,  Abdul’aziz Yari, said:

“Economic diversification is vital to ensuring the long-term economic growth we seek. We must ensure that we are competitive in the way we diversify our economy, and ensure that the private sector plays a stronger role going forward. This event should guide our states to share practical and effective experiences for boosting revenue generation and also provide strategies to kick-start the process.”
Yari, who was represented by Kano State governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, stressed that Nigeria’s economic challenges could be overcome when the leaders make conscious efforts “to do the right thing at the right time.”

The NGF chairman said members have agreed to adopt the findings of the summit as an important action plan for ensuring a more robust internally generated revenue base for states, adding:
“We will also expect periodic briefings from our secretariat on the status of these plans and how our states have been able to implement them.”

I’ll be alive to actualize Biafra - MASSOB leader

The leader of the Movement for Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, yesterday, encouraged members of the movement to remain steadfast and focused in the revolutionary struggle, saying that the non-violent methods adopted by MASSOB had become discomforting to northern socio-cultural group, Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, and the Nigerian military.

Uwazuruike said there was no going back in his bid to actualize Biafra stressing that he was in the struggle for freedom not for any other person but for his own children, who, he said, desire a free country where the security of their lives and properties can be guaranteed.

He was displeased that some Igbo elite had become stooges to oppressors, who often used them to do odd jobs and also sponsor them to discredit Biafra in order to win contracts from their masters in Abuja.
He said MASSOB has been trying to actualize Biafra for about 16 years and that nothing will stop him from actualizing it.
He said:

“ACF had asked Allah to give them Boko Haram, he gave to them and they became comfortable with its outcome. Afenifere elders had Oodua People’s Congress, OPC, fighting for social justice in Yoruba land.
“I am very happy that Biafra is being talked about all over the world and people are being killed and detained for the sake of Biafra. So, if I fail to get Biafra, then I would have failed to do what Ndigbo expected of me and if I also die for the sake of Biafra, I will be fulfilled.

Nigerian Prof wins 50 millions dollars for solving a 150 years maths problem

Nigerian academic Dr. Opeyemi Enoch has solved a maths problem, which has gone more than 150 years without a solution. The Riemann Hypothesis was first proposed by Bernhard Riemann in 1859. As the first person to provide a solution, Dr. Enoch has been awarded a million dollar prize. Read full report after the cut...

The 156 years old Riemann Hypothesis, the most important problem in Mathematics has been successfully solved by Nigeria Scholar, Dr Opeyemi Enoch.
With this breakthrough, Dr Enoch, who teaches at the Federal University, Oye Ekiti (FUOYE), has become the fourth egghead to resolve one of the seven Millennium Problems in Mathematics.
The Kogi State-born mathematician had, before now, worked on mathematical models and structures for generating electricity from sound, thunder and Oceanic bodies.

A statement in Ado Ekiti yesterday said Dr Enoch presentation of the Proof on November 11, 2015 during the International Conference on Mathematics and Computer Science in Vienna, Austria becomes more symbolic coming on the exact day and month 156 years after the problem was delivered by a German Mathematician in 1859.

The Riemann Zeta Hypothesis is one of the seven Millennium problems set forth by the Clay Mathematics Institute with a million Dollar reward for each solved problem for the past 16 years.
According to the statement, “Dr Enoch first investigated and then established the claims of Riemann. He went on to Consider and to correct the misconceptions that were communicated by Mathematicians in the past generations, thus paving way for his solutions and proofs to be established.

“He also showed how other problems of this kind can be formulated and obtained the matrix that Hilbert and Poly predicted will give these undiscovered solutions. He revealed how these solutions are applicable in cryptography, quantum information science and in quantum computers,” it stated.
Three of the problems had been solved and the prizes given to the winners. This makes it the fourth to be solved of all the seven problems.

Dr Enoch had previously designed a Prototype of a silo for peasant farmers and also discovered a scientific technique for detecting and tracking someone on an evil mission.

Enoch has succeeded in inventing methods by which oil pipelines can be protected from vandalism and he is currently working on Mathematical approaches to Climate Change...

Sinai plane crash was a terrorist attack, Russia security agency declares $50m reward for info about those responsible

Russian Federal Security Service chief Alexander Bortnikov announced today that Russian passenger jet Flight A321 was blown up by homemade explosive device equivalent up to one kg of TNT.
"It can be unambiguously said that this is a terrorist act," Bortnikov said. "In the estimates of our specialists, a self-made explosive device with its power of up to 1 kilogram in TNT equivalent went off aboard the airliner, due to which the plane broke up in the air and this explains the spread of the plane's fuselage parts over a large distance," the Federal Security Service chief said.
The FSB takes measures to find those involved in the terrorist attack on board the Russian airliner in Sinai, the service’s public relations center told TASS.

"FSB and law enforcement agencies of the Russian Federation are taking measures to detect the people involved in the crime," it said.

The Federal Security Service appeals to the Russian and the international community for assistance in search for the terrorists and has declared a $50-mln reward for information about those responsible for the plane crash.

"For providing evidence that will contribute to the detention of criminals a reward of $50 million will be paid," the FSB’s public relations department said.

Information For Unn Students

As i have always done, I come again with another useful piece of information. This is directed to my colleagues in Unec.

STUDENTS UNION GOVERNMENT
UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA
PRESS RELEASE.
09-11-15
Calvary greetings fellow Nigerian students;
We appreciate your efforts in trying to maintain peace and order in the university community despite our discontent with some issues.
With regards to the promise made in my press release yesterday about the issue of compulsory payment of #70,000 for laptops and payment of #12,000 by second years, WE are pleased to let you know our resolutions in the meeting held today with the school management as follows;
1. LAPTOPS: After a very long deliberation and what seemed like an impossible task, both parties were able to shift ground from their extremes. While the school management insisted that the laptops must be purchased once, the SUG maintained that; (a)it has to be optional, (b) it has to be price friendly, (c) it has to be spread over a number of years i.e, paid by installments. It was later agreed that it can be paid for by installments @ #75,000 payable in 3 installments (years) rather than the #90,000 payable in two instalments. This was agreed by both parties because it will lessen the economic burden on parents and guardians as they can now pay #25,000 and collect the laptop then pay another #25,000 the next year, and then another in the 3rd year. Albeit, those who have the money to pay once can do so.
Like we said earlier, we are interested in students that can't afford to pay once for this commodity
2. INTERNET ACCESS FEE: This area is quite saddening as so many will/might not be comfortable with the bargain at this point. The 2nd years were asked to continue with the #12,000 they paid for internet access in their first year. But the BIG question is; do they use a special type of Wi-Fi that other years don't use? Of course NO, then its unfair. Owing to this singular reason, we pleaded that they pay what other years pay which is #6000. It was greatly opposed by the management with the explanation that ICT is taking more than was paid for even in its skeletal nature. At the end of the argument, it was agreed that the financial burden be spread across every other level for equity and justice to prevail. This may be painful to students in higher levels, but we must all learn to be our brothers keepers. The agreed amount became #8000 for everybody. But, before you become swift in laying blames, let me give you an analysis; if 2nd years are allowed to pay #12,000 for internet access till they graduate, careful observation should let you know that the internet fees will become #12,000 permanently for everybody. So we looked at the long run before entering into this agreement so that eventually the internet access fee remains #8000 instead of #12000. On this note, we would love to bring to the notice of the incoming SUG officials, on no account will the internet access fee be increased above #8000 from any level to ensure continuum in government.
We fought and we really put in Our best in this. We want to let us know that in any dialogue, there is always a "win some and loose some" scenario. We have gone the extra mile to ensure that we come back with a positive reply, please we beg everyone to bear with us.
For everywhere we look there is work to be done. But the assurance is; we will not only work, but lay a foundation for continuity in the government.
NB: All agreements start immediately as #4000 will be refunded to second years that have paid school fees while others years that have paid will have to pay extra #2000. Inconveniences are highly regretted.
God bless you all.

Babcock slashes heart surgeries to $15,000

Inside
Rofessor of Medicine and Chief Executive Officer, Tristate Cardiovascular Institute, USA, Kamar Adeleke, has described heart related cases as the number one killer disease in the country.  He said many people in the country live on borrowed time, obviously ignorant of their ailing heart conditions.
Prof Adeleke disclosed this at the unveiling of Tristate Heart and  Vascular Centre at the Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State last week. He said the centre, equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment, would compare with international standard and seek preventive measures to heart diseases ravaging Nigerians.
To raise hope for those suffering from the disease, Adeleke said the cost of the surgery at Babcock has been subsidised to $15,000 unlike the $75,000 to $150,000 cost obtainable in specialist hospitals in western countries.
A whooping sum of N2billion has already been invested in the centre located at the Babcock University Teaching Hospital, which would attract arrays of Nigerian medical professionals in Diaspora. Also, cutting-edge medical technology would be used for the open heart surgeries, which presently has a carrying capacity of three patients per day. With many patients already queuing for the procedure, the centre would soon expand to six operating rooms to allow surgeries for 18 patients per day, using hi-tech medical equipment.
Prof Adeleke, who is also a senior fellow at the American Society of Cardiologists, said several children afflicted with the disease were at grave risk because of late intervention. “Our goal is not to treat heart disease but to prevent it”, he added.
Other specialist doctors on the team at the Babcock University Teaching Hospital include: Dr. Edward Anderson, Dr. Michael Sanusi and Dr. Mudashiru Lawal
During the first open heart surgery in the university, there were 15 critical care personnel in the operating theatre that provided specific required services. They included perfussionists, cardiac operations nurses, internists and anesthesiologists.  Over 40 successful surgeries had been handled within a short period of time.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof Kayode Makinde, said the university has entered another threshold in health service delivery with the inauguration of the highly reputed Tristate Heart and Vascular Centre, the first in Africa.  He said the university would soon become a healing valley and set benchmark in medical education in Africa.
“Our service philosophy ensures compliance with international standards in terms of quality, effectiveness, and efficiency. The centre provides services that surpass the available cardio vascular services in the sub -Saharan Africa. The preventive cardiology team helps to support the centre’s goal of placing greater emphasis on prevention by organizing various outreach programmes and conducting regular health checkups,” he said.
Makinde said the open heart surgeries in the university would reduce capital flight from the country by obviating billions of Naira funnelled abroad by Nigerians seeking medical help. According to him, the university strives to set a benchmark in medical education and other specialty areas in the country and become the pride of African continent.
Makinde said the university had earlier commenced negotiations with lots of Nigerian medical professionals in Diaspora, promising that it would reverse brain drain to brain gain.
Some of the institute’s areas of specialization include cardiac surgery, heart catheterization, cardiac testing, paediatric cardiac care, critical care: comprising a critical care unit and the critical care team.
The Director, Marketing & Communication, Joshua Suleiman, said the new medical breakthrough at the Tristate Heart and Vascular Centre of the university would continue until all patients afflicted with heart related ailments receive effective medical cure.
While celebrating the feat, Prof Iheanyichukwu Okoro, a surgeon and senior Vice President of the university, described it as a milestone. Also, Mr. Olukunle Iyanda, Vice president, Development and Strategy of the university said the medical feat couldn’t have happened at a better time than this.

How the new Ooni emerged

Ooni
From Clement Adeyi, Osogbo
Ile-Ife, the acclaimed cradle of the Yoruba race, erupted in jubilation yesterday when the Osun State Government announced the appointment of Prince Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi as the new Ooni, the town’s revered monarch.
The formal announcement was made in the early hours through a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Moshood Olalekan Adeoti.
In the three-paragraph statement, the government said: “The governor of the State of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola, has approved the appointment of a new Ooni of Ife. He is Prince Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi of the Giesi Ruling House of Ile Ife, State of Osun.
“This choice follows the completion of the due process by the kingmakers and the communication of their decision to the government,” the statement added.
One of the kingmakers and secretary to Ife Traditional Council, Chief Adetoye Olatunde Odewole, told Daily Sun at the Ile-Odua Palace in Ife yesterday that Prince Adeyeye Ogunwusi who contested alongside 36 other contestants from the Giesi Ruling House was unanimously voted winner by the 14 kingmakers and his name was submitted to the governor at the weekend for official announcement.
He further disclosed that the selection followed due process, adding that it was the turn of the Giesi Ruling House to produce the new Ooni.
Asked whether it was only the kingmakers’ decision that brought Oba Ogunwusi on board as the new Ooni, Chief Odewole said the Ifa Oracle was also consulted and gave the nod for the choice.
While also reacting to Prince Ogunwusi’s appointment, his father, Pa Ogunwusi enthused: “To God be the glory. God has sent him on a message. He will give him the grace to do the job well. The Glory of God has been upon him right from childhood with the hope that his fame will be heard about in the whole world and that has happened today and he is going to be a blessing to Ife people.”
In a related development, a prominent leader from the Giesi Ruling House and former Special Adviser to Governor Rauf Aregbesola on Youth and Special Needs, Mr Biyi Odunlade, said that Prince Ogunwusi’s emergence as the new Ooni was not by chance but by merit and popular vote by the kingmakers and the divine approval of the Ifa Oracle.
He assured that based on his amiable character, integrity, humility and passion for the culture, tradition and development of Ife, his emergence would bring more peace, progress and unity to not only Ife people but also the entire Yoruba race.
When Daily Sun visited the ancient town yesterday, there was heavy security presence, as heavily armed military men were on patrol, while armed policemen and officers of the Security and Civil Defence Corps were within the gate and premises of the palace.
Also, some kingmakers, palace chiefs and traditional rulers were in high spirits at the Emese courts of the palace.
There was palpable peace in the town, with everybody going about their normal businesses.
The members of the family of the Giesi Ruling House also trooped to the streets in jubilation over the appointment of their son, flaunting a big poster bearing the picture of Prince Ogunwusi.
The jubilation continued until they emptied into the house of Pa Ogunwusi, the father of the new monarch for celebration.
Since the death of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade at a London hospital on July 28, there had been tension and controversy in the race for a successor, a development which divided the four ruling houses, following the kingmakers’ endorsement of the Giesi Rulig House based on the 1980 Ife Chieftaincy Declaration.
In the circumstance, the Lafogido Ruling House went to court to challenge the decision.
But the Osun State High Court presided over by the Chief Judge, Justice Oyebola Adepele Ojo, on Friday, dismissed the suit challenging the competence of the chieftaincy declaration.
The appointment of Ogunwusi has since put paid to the whole controversy.

Nullification of Wike's election by Rivers tribunal is embarassing- Mimiko

Image result for mimiko
The Ondo state governor, Olusegun Mimiko has described as embarrassing, the Saturday October 24th judgement of the Rivers state election tribunal which nullified the election of Nyesom Wike as governor of the state. Mimiko gave his reaction to the judgement while speaking with journalist in Akure, the Ondo state capital yesterday October 26th.

"Our mindset is that tribunal judgment can go either way, but the Rivers own is particularly embarrassing. We all know the circumstances surrounding the Rivers State tribunal. You recall that for unjustifiable cause, that tribunal was not allowed to sit in Port Harcourt, it was taken to Abuja.
Somewhere along the line, the chairman of the Tribunal got changed.

Now, we challenge the jurisdiction of the Tribunal and it has gotten to the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court will give judgment in the next few days. The Abuja Tribunal continues to sit. On Thursday, nine written addresses were adopted.

The adoption of the written addresses were done on 1pm on Thursday. In the course of that trial, the litigants – both plaintiffs and defendants – called more than 100 witnesses, documents that were presented as exhibits were more than 1,000.

We are talking of more than 100 witnesses and 1,000 documents were admitted, we are talking of nine written addresses. None of the addresses were less than 40 pages. The adoption was on Thursday, around 1pm and Friday around 2pm, barely under 24 hours, notice had been issued that judgment was ready, that judgment was given on Saturday.

This sequence and turn of event assault the sensibilities of lawyers that really believe in justice.”he said
